In this journal entry, I sat down with Kylee and Shelby, graduating student-athletes and members of the M.A. in Advertising & Brand Responsibility program at the University of Oregon.

Both Kylee and Shelby have spent much of their lives competing in lacrosse. Shelby, who is from Philadelphia, began playing in third grade after transitioning from softball. She shared how lacrosse helped shape her focus and discipline from a young age. Kylee, originally from Wisconsin, also started playing in third grade after being inspired by a friend.

Throughout their athletic journeys, both athletes learned that the most meaningful parts of sports often happen away from competition. Shelby reflected on the close-knit nature of her team, explaining that some of her favorite memories came from small traditions, like performing a cheer routine with her teammates in the locker room. Kylee echoed this sentiment, describing the joy of living alongside teammates, sharing everyday moments, and creating memories that extended far beyond the field. She emphasized how the simple moments, laughing together, sitting on the couch after practice, and debriefing life with teammates, were often the experiences that made her collegiate athletic career so special.

Their stories serve as a reminder that while sports are often defined by wins, losses, and performance, it is the friendships, community, and shared experiences that leave the most lasting impact.

Both girls talk about a topic that many members of Gen-Z are dealing with right now, the daunting theme of graduation and the stress of the“real world”. Both Kylee and Shelby have experienced a plethora of life lessons throughout their experience in college athlete, such as the power of authenticity and time management, that they will take with them post-graduation.
